The performance of hormone measurements is in need of improvement to enable better patient care. Part of the problem is the lack of standardization, of generally accepted performance standards, and of systems to assess and monitor measurement performance. Exacerbating the technical problems is a general lack of awareness among physicians of the poor quality and incommutability of the tests they order.
PATH and the CDC Hormone Standardization Program (HoSt) are working together to standardize hormone tests and to engage stakeholders to promote high quality steroid hormone tests. Keys to this success include broad engagement by stakeholders, awareness and understanding among healthcare professionals, and a comprehensive approach to technical and policy-related barriers.
